Why choose San Miguel de Allende for this Holy Week?

San Miguel de Allende is one of the favorite tourist destinations worldwide. Here you can spend the vacation of your dreams, no matter if you are a traveler willing to discover the colors and flavors of the city or have planned a getaway as a couple, with friends or with your family. The city has everything to spend unforgettable moments during this holiday period!

But a particularity of San Miguel de Allende in this Easter season is the wonderful show full of history that its streets offer. The festivity begins on Friday of Sorrows, a day when the doors of homes are opened to reveal the altars dedicated to the Virgin of Dolores and her son. Public spaces welcome this tradition with carpets of aromatic herbs, flowers and religious figures. During Palm Sunday we recommend you attend one of the masses that are held every hour in the Parish of San Miguel Arcángel to bless the palms.

On Holy Thursday you can take a tour of the iconic churches of our city so that on Good Friday you are ready to admire the solemnity of which San Miguel dresses. This day is one of the most important because the Procession of the Holy Burial takes place, a tradition that has been practiced among the people of San Miguel for more than three centuries. The procession starts at 5:00 in the afternoon from the San Felipe Neri Oratory and lasts about 2 hours. Boys, girls and adults personify Jews, archangels, the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph. Dressed in black, carrying lanterns and holy images, they walk the streets of the heart of our city.

On Holy Saturday you can participate in the New Fire procession, among other activities that San Miguel has prepared for you. Finally, on Easter this celebration culminates with the burning of cardboard figures of Judas.

Whether you want to be part of this cultural and religious experience to learn more about our cultural heritage or come just to relax and have the most fun on these vacations, we remind you that San Miguel is waiting for you!
